Our review

Our review of the BankSA Vertigo Platinum Credit Card Online Exclusive OfferReviewed by Yvonne Taylor

The already attractive BankSA Vertigo Platinum Credit Card gains even more appeal as the BankSA Vertigo Platinum Credit Card Exclusive Offer. Enjoy all the features of the standard offer – a really long 0% p.a. balance transfer, a low ongoing purchases interest rate and above-average insurance cover – plus, with this exclusive offer, pay no annual fee in the first year. If you’ve previously been interested in this card but haven’t taken the plunge, now could be the time to give it a try, free of charge.

Transfer a balance and pay 0% p.a. interest for 24 months

There may be slightly longer balance transfer offers around, but this one is near the top of the scale, and its 1% transfer fee is lower than that of competing 26-month offers.

Consider this.

If you transfer a $5,000 balance from a card where you are currently paying 20% p.a. on an overdue debt, you’ll save $1,918 in interest charges over a period of two years. Deduct the 1% balance transfer fee ($50) and your net savings will be $1,868.

Transfer that same amount to a card offering zero interest for a slightly longer 26 months, but with a 2.5% upfront fee, and you’d save $2,070 in interest charges but pay a $125 fee, leaving you with a net saving of $1,945. The 26-month offer sounds much better at first, but in fact you’d be only $78 better off. You now need to compare the remaining card features, to see which card is likely to be best for you after the balance transfer offer expires.

Low ongoing interest rate will save you more in the long term

All balance transfer introductory interest rates eventually expire, but a low purchases interest rate just goes on and on. In this case, the interest rate is a very low rate, for a credit card – 12.74% p.a.

So there’s no need to worry about missing out on that extra $78 in the balance transfer, when this low rate could save you far more than that. If you had a closing purchases balance of $2,000 and could only afford the minimum monthly repayments of 2%, you’d pay a total of $158 interest in the first three months. Compare that with a card with a 20% p.a. interest rate on purchases, which had appeared more attractive 26 months earlier because of its slightly longer balance transfer deal. On this competing card you’d now pay $249 interest in three months on that $2,000 purchases balance. That’s an extra $91, quickly wiping out the $78 saving on the longer balance transfer.

The outcome is that a much lower ongoing purchases rate beats a slightly longer balance transfer deal, every time.

Above-average insurance cover

Even though this is a low rate card with a relatively low fee, there are seven complimentary insurance policies. Many of them offer far better cover than average credit card insurance policies. They are:

  • Overseas travel insurance: multi-trip annual policy for trips up to six months long, not three months
  • Interstate flight inconvenience insurance: offering the standard 14 days of cover
  • Transit accident insurance overseas: 'Level 1’ higher cash compensation for serious injury incurred during a plane, bus, train or ferry accident
  • Rental vehicle insurance excess cover in Australia: not just on overseas trips
  • Purchase security insurance: four months’ cover against loss, theft and accidental damage, not just the usual three months
  • Extended warranty insurance: doubling the manufacturer’s Australian warranty, up to the standard maximum of 12 extra months
  • Price guarantee cover: ensuring that you have scored the best price for your recent major purchase in a bricks-and-mortar store

Platinum concierge service and Visa Premium

Other special offers and privileges come your way with this platinum card. You’ll have access to the Visa Platinum concierge service, Visa Frontline Access for tickets to entertainment events ahead of the general public, and other Visa Premium special offers.

It can all be free in the first year

This online exclusive offer lets you sample what the card has to offer without paying a fee for the first year. The fee in the second and subsequent years is $99 p.a. (with no extra to pay for supplementary cards), still a very reasonable amount for this extra-value platinum package.

Compare this card with other low-interest platinum cards

Your choice of credit cards is a major decision likely to have an impact on your financial situation for years to come. It’s best to do thorough research, made fairly easy by checking out the competition on either our 'Balance transfer’ feature page or our 'Low interest’ feature page – or both.

The best of two worlds

With this card you can combine two sought-after elements: a long-lasting balance transfer offer for substantial immediate savings, and an ongoing low purchases interest rate as a longer-term benefit if your finances continue to be unpredictable. There aren’t too many cards offering both advantages, as well as delivering them at no charge for 12 months.
