Review

Our review of the St.George Amplify Credit Card

Choice.

The average person enjoys so much of it that it’s easy to forget that it can be a privilege rather than a right, especially when it comes to a choice of rewards program on a credit card. Very few credit cards come with this ability to pick and choose, but the fortunate holders of the St. George Amplify Credit Card can select from either St. George’s own Amplify Rewards program or the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. They can even change their minds and switch from one to the other as often as they like.

As well as loyalty points to be earned, there are introductory interest rate offers on both balance transfers and purchases.

Choose Amplify Rewards and earn one point per dollar

If you choose to start with the Amplify Rewards program, every dollar you spend on purchases with the card will see one Amplify point credited to your rewards account. It may not sound like much (and you can earn rewards points faster by choosing a different Amplify card with a higher annual fee) but you don’t need to change your spending pattern to earn points. They will accumulate effortlessly, and before too long you’ll have enough points for a worthwhile redemption.

You can also speed up the points collection rate by directing your spending to Amplify program partners: Crown, Leisure Inn, Metro and Park Regis hotels, and Amplify Travel. These businesses offer between one-third of a point and three points per dollar spent, as a bonus on top of the point already earned from St. George.

There’s no points cap, and points never expire under normal circumstances, so you can earn points as quickly or as slowly as you like.

Choose Qantas Frequent Flyer and earn 0.5 pts per $1 spent (QFF)

Opt for the Qantas program from the outset, or switch to Qantas points later, and you’ll earn 0.5 pts per $1 spent (QFF). Although this sounds like a worse deal, the fact is that in many circumstances a QFF point is much more valuable than an Amplify point. You can check this out in the comparison below.

If you are an existing QFF member, you will know that you can already earn QFF points by purchasing flights and upgrades from Qantas and Jetstar, whichever payment method you use. By using this card for your Qantas purchases, you will earn points twice – once from Qantas and once from St. George.

And there’s some more good news if you are new to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Qantas Frequent Flyer normally charges a joining fee of $89.50, but St. George has arranged for its new cardholders to have the joining fee waived. That’s worth more than the card’s annual fee.

A couple of caveats about switching programs

Although there is no financial cost or penalty involved when you switch from one loyalty program to the other, there are two things you need to be aware of when switching:

The points already earned in one program can’t be transferred to the other. Amplify points stay in your Amplify points account and Qantas points stay in your QFF account.
When switching from Amplify to Qantas, the Amplify points remaining in your account must be used within 90 days of the switch. If not used they will be forfeited.

  • (Tip: If your remaining points don’t add up to a round number, choose a redemption requiring slightly more points than you have and pay the balance in cash using the Points + Pay option available with most redemptions.)

Plenty of ways to use Amplify Rewards points

There’s no shortage of ways to redeem the Amplify points you earn through your card. Here are some of the most popular:

  • Convert Amplify points to frequent flyer points with three airlines (Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines) at the rate 1,000 Amplify points = 500 airline points.
  • Book domestic flights on any airline. E.g. Sydney to Melbourne economy on Qantas (from 26,280 points + tax), Virgin (19,070 points + tax) and Jetstar (to Melbourne Avalon, from 13,840 points + tax).
  • Book international flights. E.g. economy return from Sydney to London from around 170,000 points + tax.
  • Book hotel accommodation, starting at around 23,000 points for one night in a Melbourne CBD hotel.
  • Exchange points for gift cards to spend at retailers like David Jones, Myer, Bunnings, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and more, starting at 3,650 points for a $20 gift card.
  • Convert points into movie tickets. E.g. 11,275 points for four ‘screen saver’ passes to Village/Event cinemas.
  • Swap points for a wide range of merchandise (homewares, technology, fashion &c;), magazine subscriptions, wine, car hire and charity donations.

Just as many ways to use Qantas rewards points

Cardholders choosing Qantas points are probably more interested in award flights with Qantas, Jetstar and Oneworld alliance airlines, and they certainly get the best value for their points this way. But QFF points have just as many redemption options as Amplify Rewards do:

  • No need to convert points. Use directly with Qantas or Jetstar for award flights. E.g. Sydney to Melbourne economy on Qantas (8,000 points + tax) or Jetstar (to Melbourne Avalon, 6,400 points + tax).
  • Use Qantas points for international flights with Qantas and partner airlines. E.g. 60,000 points + tax for a Qantas economy flight from Sydney to London.
  • Book hotel accommodation, starting at around 21,000 points for one night in a Melbourne CBD hotel.
  • Redeem points for retail gift cards, starting at 4,040 points for a $25 voucher.
  • Points for movie tickets: e.g. 9,260 points for four Village/Event ‘screen saver’ passes.
  • The usual range of ‘department store’ merchandise is available from the Qantas online store, plus wine, car hire, Qantas insurance and Qantas Club membership.

Amplify or Qantas? A quick value comparison

For items where there are no variables (such as hotel room availability) to affect the number of points required, here’s a brief comparison of the amount you need to spend on your card to earn comparable rewards through Amplify and Qantas points:

  • Sydney to Melbourne economy on Qantas. Amplify $26,280, Qantas $16,000.
  • Sydney to Melbourne Avalon economy on Jetstar. Amplify $13,840, Qantas $12,800.
  • Sydney to London economy. Amplify $170,000, Qantas $120,000.
  • $50 retail gift card. Amplify $9,100, Qantas $16,160.
  • Four Village/Event cinema passes: Amplify $11,275, Qantas $18,520.

Clearly, if you want to redeem your points for flights, stick to Qantas. For anything else, choose Amplify Rewards. And remember, you can switch from one to the other to maximise your points value.

18 months at 0% p.a. on balance transfers

Transfer a balance (or more than one) from an existing credit card (outside the St. George/Bank of Melbourne/BankSA group) and pay no interest on it for a long 18 months. There’s also another plus – no upfront balance transfer fee.

If you are currently paying 20% p.a. or more on your unpaid balance, you could save some serious money. On a $3,000 balance you would save $873 in interest over 18 months, while your monthly 2% minimum repayments would make a significant dent in your interest-free debt, reducing it to $2,085.

For anyone not struggling with credit card debt, there’s still money to be made, especially if you have a mortgage offset bank account. Perhaps your credit card balance is $3,000 because you have just made a major purchase, but one that you can actually afford. Transfer your $3,000 balance instead of repaying it, and put the $3,000 into your 4% mortgage offset account. At the end of 18 months you’ll have saved a tidy $185 in mortgage interest.

The balance transfer revert interest rate is the ongoing purchase interest rate of 19.49% p.a., so diarise the interest-free period’s expiry date so that you can make full repayment and avoid paying high interest.

Take a look at competitors

It’s always worthwhile to consider what competing cards are offering before you decide which card is best for you. If you want the same ability to swap between Qantas points and standard rewards points, your only other option at a comparable price is the $100 p.a. Westpac Altitude Credit Card.

However, if you’re committed to Qantas, the cheapest option is the Qantas American Express Discovery Card. There’s no annual fee to pay, and the QFF earning rate is 1 pt per $1 spent. The downside is that AmEx cards are not accepted everywhere, or may require a transaction surcharge.

If you want rewards, but don’t care too much about what brand they are, consider the American Express Essential Credit Card (no annual fee) or the Coles No Annual Fee MasterCard.

Why choose the St. George Amplify Credit Card?

Since it’s possible to get a rewards card without paying an annual fee, why would you choose the St. George Amplify Credit Card and pay $79 p.a. for the privilege?

You would choose it because $79 p.a. per year is possibly the lowest price you can expect to pay for a universally-accepted Visa card with, not just any old rewards scheme, but one that allows you to change at will between Qantas and Amplify points to get the best return for your credit card expenditure.

Trusted brand, useful features

Reviewed and recommended by Katie on 06 Dec 2016

This card came with my Portfolio Loan, so is fee-free.

I like the payWave feature for transactions under $100. I trust the brand.

The rewards seem OK. There is a lot of choice.

Customer service is good. I have no complaints. The interest-free period is 55 days, so that’s excellent!

Good for a back up

Reviewed and recommended by Simon on 26 Aug 2016

I got this card as my first credit card. I wasn’t happy paying fees on it though, as it doesn’t offer the best rewards, like some others. So when I went to cancel, to get me to keep the card St George cancelled the fees, so it’s now the perfect card to use where only Visa is accepted.

Convenient standby card

Reviewed and recommended by Peter on 23 Aug 2016

It’s a good card to have in my wallet on standby when I am away overseas, in case i need to buy something special or need to get extra money to pay for items. It doubles as an ATM card for cash or as a credit card for paying for items while i am away.

Pleased with the rewards program

Reviewed and recommended by Klara on 05 Jul 2016

I do not generrally like credit cards. However, I do not mind this credit card as it is linked to the other banking cards I have and, therefore, I do have less fees. I like the rewards program, and like to shop online to purchase items. It is easy to use.

Great overall package

Reviewed and recommended by Michael on 14 Jun 2016

This card is great if you pay it off each month. A terrific way to access a disciplined approach to credit. The website and mobile app are secure, comprehensive, and easy to use. It allows viewing of balances, transactions, and makes it easy to access everyday banking functions. Have used this credit card for many years with no problems or complaints. You can also link the card to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account to earn points.

Good when it works

Reviewed and not recommended by Matt on 24 May 2016

I have had this card for about 4 years and the rewards are pretty good, particularly when travelling overseas. The big problem is when it doesn’t work. Their overzealous fraud team seems to block my card every month. I have never actually had a fraud carried out against this card.

All about the customer service

Very pleased with my card. We are impressed with the service we have had from St George bank. Staff very professional and helpful either when dealing with them over the phone or at a branch. This is compared with some other banks we tried when moving here. We would not change.

Part of our home loan package

Our card is a part of our home package where we have no fees at a low interest rate as well. We have never had any problems as the provider that we are with are always very helpful and provide us with excellent service with any problem we may have or they just generally call to make sure everything is fine.
