Review

Our review of the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card Exclusive Offer

Here’s one out of the box that will be difficult for competitors to match. The St. George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card Exclusive Offer brings together an unlikely set of features that you will struggle to find anywhere else. But it could be just what you were looking for.

Would you like platinum benefits, including the full suite of complimentary insurance policies, without which no premium card is complete? But you still want one of the lowest ongoing purchase interest rates around? No problem.

You don’t want to pay for the rewards points which often encumber platinum cards? Don’t worry, because there are no rewards points.

And, saving the best till last, you can have all this plus a truly amazing balance transfer offer.

3% p.a. balance transfer offer for 36 months

This is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone who needs either long-term debt consolidation or a way to extend the payment period on a recent major credit card purchase which has put a serious strain on their budget. It’s way better than any personal loan interest rate you’re likely to get, plus there’s no up-front fee, and the generous three-year period before the 12.74% p.a. revert rate kicks in should give you plenty of time to get your finances sorted.

There are other cards on the market offering 0% balance transfers for 24 months.

Competing balance transfer cards

There are two cards currently available offering a 0% balance transfer for 24 months: the NAB Premium Card and the Citi Rewards Platinum Card Balance Transfer Offer. But these cards have an aggressive revert rate of 21.74% p.a. which applies after two years rather than three, and both have an upfront balance transfer fee (3% p.a. for the NAB card and 1.5% for the Citi card).

The balance transfer fees add up to an equivalent interest rate of not 0%, but closer to 1.5% p.a. for the NAB card and 0.75% p.a. for the Citi card, and both cards have annual fees which are almost identical to that of the St. George card over a two-year period.

So, ignoring the annual fee but including interest costs and balance transfer fees, the relative costs for a $10,000 balance transfer over 24 months would be:

  • St. George Vertigo Platinum Card Exclusive Offer: Interest $493 + balance transfer fee $0 = $493
  • NAB Premium Card: Interest $0 + balance transfer fee $300 = $300
  • Citi Rewards Platinum Card Balance Transfer Offer: Interest $0 + balance transfer fee $75 = $75

Clearly, the Citi card wins hands-down in cost terms after two years, and the NAB card also costs less than the St.George card. However, after minimum monthly repayments of 2%, there would still be $6,283 of the $10,000 balance transfer left to repay at the end of two years. If you couldn’t come up with the cash, you’d be looking at paying 21.74% p.a. to NAB or Citi for the next 12 months, but only 3% p.a. to St.George.

This is where the St.George card shines, in that third year if you need it. With the St. George card you’d pay a further $178 in interest, and reduce your debt to $5,287 after 2% minimum monthly repayments. But the NAB and Citi cards would charge you a whopping $1,349 interest in the third year, and you’d still owe $6,116.

This is what those cost comparisons look like after three years:

  • St. George Vertigo Platinum Card Exclusive Offer: $493 + 3rd year interest $178 = $671
  • NAB Premium Card: $300 + 3rd year interest $1,349 = $1,649
  • Citi Rewards Platinum Card Balance Transfer Offer: $150 + 3rd year interest $1,349 = $1,499

So if you think you’re going to need that low-interest third year, the St. George card can save you at least $828 when compared with a 24 months at 0% balance transfer offer.

Low ongoing purchase interest rate

If you are temporarily struggling to make ends meet, you may also be very interested in the low ongoing purchase interest rate of 12.74% p.a. However, with a balance transfer in place, you’d forfeit the normal interest-free days of Up to 55 days on purchases each statement period. Even at this low interest rate (for a credit card), you would probably want to avoid using the card for purchases until after the balance transfer was paid off.

That low interest rate will be a boon if you need it in future though, and that same low 12.74% p.a. (rather than the 21.49% p.a. cash advance rate) is the revert rate which applies to the balance transfer if you still haven’t fully repaid it after three years.

Platinum benefits for a $99 p.a. annual fee

Since this exclusive offer’s major appeal is the 3% p.a. balance transfer, the platinum benefits may appear superfluous. This applies especially if you have an unpaid balance transfer, since you need to use the card for purchases in order to take advantage of the complimentary insurance (thus paying 12.74% p.a. interest from the transaction date). However, even if you can’t use the platinum benefits immediately, they will be waiting for you once the balance transfer has been paid off.

The platinum benefits are:

  • Overseas travel insurance: For trips up to six months long, unlimited emergency medical expenses, luggage cover, travel delay and unavoidable cancellation, rental vehicle excess waiver and more, in return for using the card to pay at least $500 of the trip’s prepaid expenses.
  • Interstate flight inconvenience: For trips up to 14 days, similar cover to overseas travel insurance (minus the medical expenses cover) where airfares were paid using the card.
  • Rental vehicle excess waiver in Australia even when not travelling away from home.
  • Transit accident insurance providing compensation for transport accidents.
  • Purchase security: 120 days of cover against loss, theft and accidental damage for personal items bought with the card.
  • Extended warranty: Up to 12 months extra cover.
  • Price guarantee: A refund of the price difference if you see a recently-purchased item advertised at a much lower price nearby.
  • 24/7 global concierge service: Assistance with recommendations and bookings for travel, entertainment and dining.

A card for anyone seeking the best long-term balance transfer

This St George Vertigo Platinum Card Exclusive Offer could become the go-to solution for anyone needing an extended period of financial latitude. In the right circumstances it could replace a personal loan, and it’s certainly a very practical debt consolidation option for anyone with unpaid balances on multiple cards.

Even though you will probably be unable to use the platinum benefits for a while if you do take up the balance transfer option, it will be reassuring to know that they are available if and when you need them.
