Our review

Our review of the BankSA Amplify Credit CardReviewed by Yvonne Taylor

You can have a rewards program. You can even choose your rewards program. You can enjoy a long zero interest period on a balance transfer. You can take advantage of up to 55 days interest-free every month. You can get your shopping done quickly and effortlessly with Visa payWave. You can have a supplementary card without paying extra. But best of all, you can have this neat little package of everything you want and nothing superfluous, for only $79 p.a. It’s called the BankSA Amplify Credit Card.

Not just rewards, but a choice of rewards

Very few rewards credit cards let you choose the kind of points you want to earn, and it’s especially rare with a relatively low-fee card like this one. Not sure whether you want to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points or participate in the bank’s own program, Amplify Rewards? No problem. You can start with one and then switch to the other, and change your mind as often as you like. (Just be aware that points already earned in one program can’t be converted to the other.)

Free Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership

If you’re not already a Qantas Frequent Flyer, the $89.50 joining fee could be the deterrent that’s holding you back. But BankSA will pay your joining fee, so you even if you do change your mind you won’t have lost anything.

Earning points

The points earning system is quite straightforward. For every dollar spent using the card you will receive:

  • 0.5 pts per $1 spent with Qantas, or
  • 1 pt per $1 spent with Amplify.

You can earn extra Amplify points by directing your spending to Amplify program partners, including hotel chains (Crown, Leisure Inn, Metro and Park Regis) and theme parks (Dreamworld, Whitewater World). And if you use your card to purchase Qantas flights and upgrades you’ll earn points twice—once with Qantas and once with your Amplify card.

There are no first purchase bonus points and no double points for overseas spending, because this is a stripped-back card with a moderate fee. It’s more likely to appeal to someone who regards rewards as an incidental benefit rather than a major incentive.

Spending points

The points will stack up, however, without any extra effort on your part. Just use your card for your everyday spending and see the number grow.

If you choose Amplify rewards you can redeem the points for:

  • Merchandise in the Amplify Rewards online catalogue
  • Paying your $79 annual card fee (14,400 points)
  • Booking Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar domestic flights
  • Booking international flights to almost anywhere in the world
  • Online hotel bookings worldwide
  • Frequent flyer points with Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, at the rate 2 Amplify points = 1 frequent flyer point
  • Gift cards to spend at major Australian retailers, starting at 3,650 points for a $20 card
  • Movie tickets—11,275 points for four Event Cinema adult passes

If you chose Qantas Frequent Flyer points you can redeem them for:

  • Qantas and Jetstar flights and upgrades (a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Melbourne Avalon starts at 6,235 points)
  • Flights and upgrades with one of the Qantas group partner airlines, including American Airlines, Emirates, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and many more
  • Car hire with Avis and Budget, or Qantas valet parking passes
  • Booking at 100,000 hotels throughout the world
  • Merchandise in the Qantas online store
  • Retail gift cards, starting at 4,040 points for a $25 card
  • Movie tickets—9,220 points for four Event Cinema adult passes

If you compare the Amplify and Qantas points required for gift cards and movie tickets—and remember that earning a Qantas point takes twice as much card spending as earning an Amplify point—it’s clear that you would only choose the Qantas Frequent Flyer rewards option if you intended to use the points for flights and upgrades. If you want merchandise, gift vouchers and the other options, it’s best to stick with the Amplify program and earn the same rewards by spending much less.

Long, long interest-free balance transfer option

You can transfer a balance to this card and get 0% p.a. on it for 18 months. While some cards offer a 20-month or even a 24-month zero interest option, the catch is that there is often a fee of 2-3% payable on the amount transferred. So if you transferred a balance of $5,000, you could end up repaying $5,150.

At the end of 18 months, any remaining amount of the transferred balance will start to attract interest at the revert rate (the ongoing cash advance rate) of 20.24% p.a., so plan to have your finances in order before that time so that you can repay the balance in full.

Up to 55 days interest-free each month

Not all credit cards come with as many as 55 interest-free days each month. Many other cards offer only 44 days interest-free. That extra 11 days per month can make quite a difference. It gives your cash an additional 132 days a year to stay in the bank, earning interest or reducing your mortgage cost. That means a regular $2,000 monthly purchase balance would reduce the interest cost in a 5% mortgage offset account by an extra $36 per year, when compared with a 44-day card. It may not sound like much, but it could become more significant if interest rates go up, and the best part is you don’t need to do anything to earn this extra $36. Just sit back and let it happen.

One important point to remember: if you choose to transfer a balance, you’ll forfeit the interest-free days on purchases until your balance is paid off. So use another card, or cash, for your purchases during the first 18 months.

Visa payWave and other practical features

It’s reassuring to know that this card will keep you up-to-date with the latest in payment technology. It comes with Visa payWave, for speedy, contactless transactions under $100.

But perhaps the most practical feature is that it is fuss-free. There are no complicated insurance policies to assess so that you can decide if they’re worthwhile, nor any other complimentary benefits beyond the balance transfer and the moderate rewards points. The result is a relatively modest $79 p.a., with a $0 p.a. fee for supplementary cards.

Free first year for BankSA customers

You don’t need to be a BankSA customer in order to apply for this card, but if you are an existing customer the bank will reward your loyalty by not charging the card fee until the second year.

Good service, local branches

BankSA is a great bank to have an account with and it has excellent customer service. It’s great to be a customer of BankSA as they have branches near where I live.

The fee is not expensive. I have this card because I’m good with money. I like BankSA.

Budget friendly fees and easy application

Reviewed and recommended by Suzukisue on 12 Sep 2013

The Amplify card was a breeze to apply for and the no annual fee (Advantage package bonus) made it budget friendly! BankSA have continued to provide excellent customer service and gave us a sensible limit on this credit card so that things don’t get 'out of hand’. I would highly recommend this card.

Great bank, instant online transactions

Reviewed and recommended by Jake on 07 Nov 2016

BankSa is a great bank with excellent customer service. I have never had an issue, except for the occasional payment honour fee when I am over my limit. My cards have always accomplished their roles as cards — 10/10. I can make fast instant online payments to my PayPal and other bank accounts.

I would definitely recommend this bank over the other below-average ones.

Get out of trouble card

Reviewed and recommended by John Mihalopoulos on 11 Oct 2013

I have only used the card for get out of trouble situations – like large amount of bills coming in at one time and therefore what you have put away will not cover that debt. Then the following month we will pay that debt back. Nothing bad to say about the card, its how you use it and how responsible you are when it comes time to paying that debt back. I wish the interest would be a whole lot less, that would make it a very attractive card. As far as customer service goes – I couldn’t deal with a much better group or bank, very happy.
