Our review of the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card

Anyone with a hefty credit card debt they are temporarily struggling to repay could do worse than give the St. George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card some serious consideration. For many users the main initial appeal of this card will be the 12 months interest-free period on balance transfers. There’s an additional sweetener of zero interest on purchases for the first six months.

Low end purchase interest rate and reasonable annual fee

Although the cash advance interest rate of 21.49% p.a. is amongst the highest, the ongoing purchase interest rate, which kicks in after six months, is only 12.74% p.a., a moderate rate in the credit card world. It’s the same story with the annual fee, at $99 p.a. not by any means the lowest, but reasonable for the benefits that come with a platinum level card.

Crunching the numbers

There’s a maximum credit limit of $40,000 on the card, but technically this means that, if you could qualify for the full limit, you could transfer a whopping $38,000 balance (95% of credit limit) and pay no interest for 12 months. You’d need to make minimum monthly repayments of 2% of the transferred amount, but the interest saving would still add up to more than $7,400 if you are currently paying 20% p.a. The saving is proportional, so a $10,000 transfer, for example, would save you over $1,950.

Points collectors look elsewhere

With no frequent flyer or other rewards scheme points on offer with this card, it’s not one that will interest committed points collectors, except as an ancillary card for the sake of the balance transfer deal only.

Insurance package

A number of valuable insurance benefits are built into the card.

  • Comprehensive overseas travel insurance: Medical expenses, property cover, trip cancellation, transit accident, rental vehicle excess, saving at least $430 a year for a family policy. Just make sure you activate the cover by paying for at least $500 of each trip’s expenses using your St. George Vertigo Platinum card.
  • Domestic flight inconvenience, property and rental car excess cover also apply to shorter interstate trips within Australia.
  • Shopper’s insurance cover: When you make purchases with the card, you also get extended warranty insurance (doubles the manufacturer’s warranty with a maximum of 12 months’ additional cover), price guarantee cover (price difference refunded if you find it cheaper elsewhere within 21 days) and four months’ cover against theft, loss or accidental damage of the item.

Premium concierge service

The Visa Platinum Concierge Service (Visa Premium) provided with the card appears to offer much the same benefits (travel bookings, show tickets, restaurant reservations) as the Visa Signature Concierge Service accompanying Visa Signature cards, even though the websites and contact phone numbers are different. It’s handy if you need this kind of service, a negligible benefit if you don’t.

Before you decide

Take a glance at what the competition is offering before you make your mind up. The Citi Rewards Platinum Card Balance Transfer offer currently has balance transfers without interest for even longer (24 months) but the annual fee is higher ($49 p.a. for the first year, but $149 thereafter) and the ongoing purchase interest rate is 20.99% p.a. compared with St. George Vertigo Platinum card’s 12.74% p.a.. The Citibank card does come with uncapped rewards points though, and there’s also a Citi Classic card with capped points, a lower annual fee, a 15 months interest-free balance transfer, but no travel insurance and the same high purchase interest rate of 20.99% p.a..

The ideal card for . . .

The St. George Vertigo Platinum card will suit anyone who needs to make a balance transfer in order to obtain breathing space to sort out their card repayments, and probably has another card on which to make purchases and collect rewards points. Just don’t forget to use your St. George card for overseas and interstate travel expenses if you want to rely on the travel insurance.

It's worked OK for me

Reviewed and recommended by Kathryn on 31 Aug 2016

My St George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card is a reliable card. It’s convenient to use for online shopping, buying concert tickets, travelling etc. I’ve had no trouble with it at all and would have no hesitation to recommend it to others. In fact, I already have to my family and friends.

One of the lowest interest rates, but no rewards

Reviewed and recommended by Poizon on 18 Jul 2016

It has one of the lowest of interest rates out there. Who’s 100% happy paying interest? I could do without an annual card fee, or maybe the fee could be reduced.
I haven’t had any issues in all the years I’ve had it. It’s the only card i’ve ever had, so I can make no comparison.
They are quick dealing with fraud.

Great balance transfer facility

Reviewed and recommended by Darryl on 25 Jun 2016

It really helped save me money on the interest I would have needed to pay had I not been able to do a balance transfer with this credit card! It was really easy to make payments to the card having a St.George Complete Freedom account as well. It was also very easy to apply for balance transfers.

Saved me getting hit with interest

Reviewed and recommended by Joshua on 09 Jun 2016

Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to use a large sum of the credit card from my own bank. Due to financial pressures I could only pay back the bare minimum. At this point I started getting hit with interest fees. I applied for the Vertigo Platinum for the 0% interest-free window. The balance transfer was quick and convenient. I am now re-paying St.George without the hassle of interest.

I saved a lot of money with this card

Reviewed and recommended by Winnie on 09 Jun 2016

The St.George branch staff recommended this card to me. I used it for the balance transfer and saved around $600 a year in interest repayments. I also save money on the annual fee for the first year. I recommended this card to my family and friends and some of them got this card as well.

It is a great card with a low interest rate from a trusted lender. The most suitable card for our needs, we worked out that the pros outweigh the cons and we are better off with this card. Minimum limit on the card is $6,000, which is suitable for us.
