Our review

Our review of the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit CardReviewed by Yvonne Taylor

Although Woolworths have their own loyalty program, Woolworths Rewards, they recognise that many of their customers are committed to collecting Qantas Frequent Flyer points. So they not only give them the option of converting Woolworths Rewards points to QFF points, they also make it possible to earn additional Qantas points on all credit card spending with the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card That lets you double-dip, with two ways to earn lots of Qantas points from one well-filled shopping trolley.

The card comes loaded with hefty first purchase bonus points, complimentary insurance policies, an attractive zero-interest balance transfer option, discounts you can actually use and platinum lifestyle benefits for a little-added zing.

Earn 1 pt per $1 spent, everywhere

This card’s 1 pt per $1 spent earning rate is the best Visa rate you’ll get for an annual fee this low, $99 p.a. first year, $169 p.a. thereafter. You can pay less, provided you’re willing to put up with a stand-alone American Express card or an AmEx/Visa pair where the Visa points earning rate falls to 0.5 points per dollar.

Unfortunately, there’s a cap on the $169 p.a.

The good news about the earning rate is somewhat diminished by the monthly points cap of $2,500. Monthly spending above this level earns only 0.5 points per dollar. There may not be many months where you exceed the $2,500 cap, but it will probably annoy you if it happens.

Earn bonus points with Qantas

The earning rate doubles to 2.0 points per dollar for selected Qantas purchases. You’ll receive one bonus point for every dollar spent on Qantas flights and Qantas Club and QFF program fees.

One bonus missing here is the waived Qantas Frequent Flyer program joining fee. Most card issuers pay your QFF joining fee, but Woolworths doesn’t, possibly assuming that if you’ve chosen this card you’re already a member.

Earn extra Qantas points by joining the Woolworths Rewards program

Strictly speaking, this isn’t a benefit of the credit card. Anyone can join the Woolworths Rewards program and earn one Woolworths point per dollar for their spending, however they pay, at Woolworths supermarkets (including online), Caltex Woolworths service stations and BWS liquor stores. But if you choose to have the Woolworths Money Qantas Platinum Credit Card, it would make sense to join the Woolworths Rewards program and convert your Woolworths points to QFF points as well.

You need to make sure that you opt-in to automatic conversion to Qantas points, otherwise, you’ll just get money off your Woolworths shopping. The conversion rate is 2,000 Woolworths points = 870 QFF points (i.e. 0.435 QFF points per dollar spent at selected Woolworths group retailers).

Another minor benefit is that your Woolworths credit card doubles as your Woolworths Rewards card. There’s no need to carry, and scan, two separate cards.

Hefty first purchase bonus of –

Just make any purchase in the first month of holding the card, and see your QFF points balance go rocketing upwards with this valuable bonus.

Once again, this is the best Qantas bonus points deal at this annual fee level.

Ways to spend Qantas points

There’s nothing to stop you shopping at the Qantas online store to exchange your points for merchandise, gift cards or hotel accommodation, but there’s little doubt that the best return is achieved by spending them on flights and upgrades with Qantas and its One World partners: the longer the flight, the higher the seat grade, the better the return in most cases. Consider these options:

  • 60,000 points + taxes earns a one-way economy flight to London. Pay around $850 for the return leg with this card and earn 1,700 QFF points. Spend $12,753 (earning 18,300 points from the combined loyalty programs) at Woolworths and its partners (less than $125 per week spread over two years). Add the 40,000 first-purchase bonus points to the 20,000 points you earned, and you have a return economy flight to Europe for $850 plus one lot of taxes.

Zero interest balance transfer option

Although you’re unlikely to choose this card for the balance transfer option alone (because there are better deals available from other cards) its presence might just clinch the deal. Bring a balance across from your existing card or cards, and pay no interest on it for 14 months.

Unfortunately, having an unpaid balance transfer means that you’ll forfeit the regular interest-free days – Up to 55 days on purchases. This effectively prevents you from spending with the card to earn QFF points, because no one wants to pay interest from the date of the transaction on all their credit card purchases. So think long and hard before you bring that balance across.

The balance transfer revert rate is the extremely high 21.99% p.a. cash advance rate. The ongoing purchase rate is not much lower, at 20.49% p.a., so this is definitely not a card for someone who does not expect to clear all balances every month after the zero-interest offer expires.

A stack of attached benefits

Since it’s a platinum card you’ll expect platinum benefits, but prepare to be surprised at just how many there are. Here’s the full list:

  • Extensive suite of complimentary insurance policies

Buy trip fares or merchandise with the card to receive cover for overseas travel and domestic flights, transit accidents, extended warranty, purchase protection and global rental vehicle insurance excess waiver.
  • 10% off Woolworths in-store shop once every month

The discount applies to a weekend shop, so save up your non-perishable and freezer purchases and make them once a month. The maximum purchase on which discount can be claimed each time is $500, but this could be worth $600 a year if you’re well-organised. Sadly, the discount is not available in Tasmania.
  • 10% of Woolworths Insurance Car, home, pet and travel insurance.
  • 50% off selected wine cases at Cellarmasters
  • 24/7 worldwide concierge

Your personal assistant for entertainment and travel recommendations and bookings.
  • Access to Visa Luxury Hotels Collection benefits

Free wi-fi, free breakfast for two, room upgrade and late checkout when available, $25 voucher to spend on food and drinks.
  • Visa Entertainment offers

Exclusive offers on tickets to entertainment and sporting events.

Why this card could be the best fit for you

The Woolworths Money Qantas Platinum Credit Card could really earn its place in your wallet if you are an enthusiastic QFF points collector who shops regularly at Woolworths and its Caltex fuel outlets, and also has a BWS nearby. It’s cheap (for a QFF points card), it rewards you with QFF points and money off your shopping for doing exactly what you normally do (shop at Woolworths group businesses) and it has a heap of other benefits, notably the travel insurance which, as Qantas Frequent Flyer, you are likely to use regularly.

Great customer service

Really helpful and friendly customer service. Called to ask about merchant direct debits. They knew what I was talking about and advised what I had to do. Although the process is a bit rubbish, the experience was good and I would give them an 8 out of 10 for customer service.

My credit card is excellent in every way. The monthly statements are presented well with the outstanding debt shown under “pending”, which is of inestimable help. Credit limits are fair and reasonable. All in all, this is an excellent product, especially with the Qantas points. The additional capacity to quickly BPAY the balance outstanding adds to the overall convenience and accuracy.

Excellent credit card for frequent flyer points

Reviewed and recommended by Peter Hodges on 06 Sep 2014

Very good value for money, annual fee is $89 and you can very quickly accumulate Qantas frequent flyer points (1 per $1 spent and 1 for every $1 over $30 at Woolworths group stores). The only big area of improvement would be the frequency at which the transactions are updated on their online service. For instance, with my savings account, any transaction will show up instantly which makes it easy to track where your money has gone but with the Woolworths Qantas Credit Card sometimes transactions will not show up for 1 – 2 business days. Whilst it doesn’t sound like much if you make a bunch of transaction over the weekend you will have to wait until Wednesday of the following week before they start to show up in the online transactions. Otherwise, it’s a great card!

Customer service is terrible

Reviewed and recommended by Ak on 12 Feb 2014

Too hard to deal with and get straight answers from them. They constantly pass you on when on the phone to them. No insurance offered. No high street branch where to can go and and talk to someone face to face. After our year is up, we’re changing credit card provider.

Pleased with this card

Reviewed and not recommended by Sally on 03 Oct 2014

This card was recommended to me by a family member. It was very easy to get, the application process was easy and customer service was great. There is no additional fee for paper statements (this is important to me as I like to keep a hard copy and to have it as a prompt to make payment). Great rewards program! Often get to shop for “rewards” with my points.

Some great rewards for a low monthly fee

Reviewed and recommended by Steve on 04 Dec 2016

I really enjoy using this card. It gives us 55 days to pay and it’s accepted everywhere.

You earn some good points for Qantas and you will save at the petrol pump too. Woolworths throws in some great offers from time to time too, like 10%-15% off your first shop on weekends.

Happy with this card, but don't like annual fees

Reviewed and recommended by Carmel on 03 Jul 2016

I quite like the rewards on this card and the ease of use of the website. I like the fact I can make notes and categorise each purchase I make, which can really help at tax time.

The only thing I would like to see is a reduction in the annual fee and the ability to pay my credit card balance on the Woolworths card website, just the same as you can for AmEx.

Seems to be devalued every year

Reviewed and not recommended by Eddie on 19 Jul 2016

Originally signed up when this card was $89/year, and have since seen the annual fee creep up to $139/year, and now its due to go up again to $169.

At the same time the Qantas points, which used to be uncapped at 1 point per dollar, have been reduced to 0.5 points per dollar for spend greater than $2500 per statement period (the first $2500 still earns 1:1). OK if you spend under $2500 a month, otherwise, not such great value.

Sign up bonuses also seem to have been reduced (used to be 16,000 Qantas points standard, and I actually signed up at 20,000 bonus points), and now they only seem to offer 10,000.

The Dine Play Stay program they offer with this card is OK, but the restaurants available are quite limited IMO.

Will be cancelling before my next annual fee is due.
